Fontech takes advantage of artificially-produced fonic artes to use as a power source and controlling mechanism. Theoretically, one might be able to use the seventh fonon to create true intelligence, it being the fonon of life and memory. Further, when enough of a specific fonon gather together, the fonons themselves become sentient. That sentience can be trapped and harnessed; I've seen it happen, though never in a machine.
