buildstherobots: (so poorly cast as a malcontent)

[There's talking yelling over the receiver immediately; it seems as though he's been ranting for a good thirty seconds before the phone actually picked it up.]

--this is another one of Jade's tricks I will flay him alive! All my clothes are gone and I've never been in this house before and there's a strange woman and I am going to kill someone over this if I don't get my clothes and robots back. In their sleep. With a knife. A gorgeous knife. That's on fire. Just watch your back, whoever you are. I'm very good at finding people, and I will find you.

[Beat.]

...But at least I can go outside again.

[This fact made the whole situation significantly less Not Okay, even, but far be it from Dist to not find something to bitch about.]

... Never mind.

It's Mayfield. It gives your things back whenever it likes, and there's not much we can do about it.

[Huffs slightly]

Well that's just unacceptable. I'm too gorgeous to put up with this nonsense.

Don't tell me you've never heard of the beautiful fontech genius Dist the Rose?

... I haven't, no. I think I would have, if there were another stunning individual walking around. Trying to take my title.

Hmph. What rock have you been living under, then?

I've been stuck here, is what.

And I bet you've never heard of me, which is the real tragedy.

Sideswipe.

The All Spark's gift to the Autobot army, the best damn warrior ever built, and the most gorgeous sight on the battlefield.

... Yes. Built. What did you think I said?

N-nothing! I have, after all, built my own sentient robots; beautiful specimens, really. They were simply not battle-worthy and I was simply caught off-guard.

... That's not possible. No one can build a sentient mechanical being. They're not... you need a spark.

I'd introduce you to Barrelow, but he was sort of stupid and jumped off a boat into the ocean.

I imagine it would be quite difficult to do without fonons, though, yes.

It's impossible. You humans can think you've put sentience in their processors all you want. Without a spark, it's just another intelligent machine.

... without... what?

Fonons. Basic particles of sound. Come in seven flavors? a core component in all matter? Fontech won't work without them.

... How does that make something sentient?

From: [identity profile] buildstherobots.livejournal.com
[SIGH. Why does this even have to be explained.]

Everything operates on the same natural laws; intelligence can be simulated with a sophisticated enough device. Fontech takes advantage of artificially-produced fonic artes to use as a power source and controlling mechanism. Theoretically, one might be able to use the seventh fonon to create true intelligence, it being the fonon of life and memory. Further, when enough of a specific fonon gather together, the fonons themselves become sentient. That sentience can be trapped and harnessed; I've seen it happen, though never in a machine.

...

[All that registers is the last part. Sideswipe's processor was not constructed with scientific understanding in mind.]

... So you haven't ever made a sentient, mechanical life form.

Hmph. It was close enough that there's no way anyone would be able to tell the difference.

That's exactly what I am.

An intelligent machine, then, I'm guessing.

Tell me more.

Living, sentient machine, thank you.

... like what?
